Our Mission
The Salvage Fisherman's Museum is a community museum focused on conserving and sharing the stories, landscape, and way of life in Salvage through the centuries. The collection supports intergenerational storytelling, traditional skills and crafts, local landscape knowledge, maritime knowledge, and the historic lifeways of fishermen and their families in the region.
Fishing and Maritime Life
Fishing gear, boat and schooner stories, local fishing marks, hand tools, fishery records, and objects connected to the work of the harbour.
Domestic Life
Furniture, lighting, heating, kitchen tools, clothing, bedding, and everyday objects from families who lived and worked in Salvage.
Textiles and Craft
Knitting, sewing, embroidery, spinning, dyeing, broom making, woodworking, and handmade objects that show local skill and resourcefulness.
Photographs and Documents
Historic photographs, family histories, church records, community records, interpretive panels, and research files connected to Salvage and the Eastport Peninsula.
Education Collection
Some objects are used for learning, demonstrations, and hands-on activities so visitors can better understand traditional materials and skills.
Community Memory
Many artifacts were donated or loaned by residents and descendants, reflecting what the community itself considered important to preserve.
Donations and Loans
The museum welcomes stories, photographs, documents, and historical materials connected to Salvage, nearby communities, and the broader Eastport Peninsula. Because storage, conservation, and documentation resources are limited, donations and loans are reviewed before they are accepted into the collection.
Before Bringing an Item
Please contact the museum first. Helpful information includes who owned or used the item, where it came from, dates or family connections, photographs, and any stories that explain why it matters.
Research and Genealogy
Visitors interested in family history, church records, local photographs, or community history are encouraged to ask staff or volunteers for help. Some resources are available on site in binders and records files.
